Ramakrishna Math, Dakshineshwar

History of Ramakrishna Math, Dakshineshwar

About the  Ramakrishna Math, Dakshineshwar

The seed of the worldwide Ramakrishna Movement was planted at the Kali temple in Dakshineswar, Kolkata by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Spending more than three decades of His life in this temple compound, He established a spiritual empire which has been attracting countless spiritual aspirants through the years. It is here that He initiated Swami Vivekananda and dedicated him to serve the society following the dictum ‘Shiva Jnane Jiva Seva’ (service to man thinking him to be God).

It had been our earnest wish to have our presence near the Dakshineswar temple complex, where we find the root of our organization.

Since the year 2010, Ramakrishna Math had its presence at Dakshineshwar after receiving a gift of a small house property at Dakshineshwar, from one Sri Chandi Das Banerjee, a disciple of Swami Shankaranandaji Maharaj, VII President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. Thereafter the property remained under Headquarters and occasionally monks stayed there for doing Sadhana.

The much awaited wait came to an end when by the grace of Lord, in the year 2018 we were fortunate to procure a piece of land measuring around 33 Katha adjoining the eastern boundary wall and next to the Second Gate (vehicular exit gate) of Dakshineshwar Kali temple.

On 3rd April 2022, Ramakrishna Math Belur acquired a 2 Cottah house property situate and lying adjacent to the said small house property, from Sri Debashis Ganguly and others.

On 27th April, 2022, The Board of Trustees of the Ramakrishna Math, Belur, in its meeting decided to start a branch centre and authorized Swami Ishavratananda to manage, control and conduct the activities of the Ramakrishna Math, Dakshineshwar, under overall control of the General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math, Belur.

The existing structures on the said 33 Katha land where the centre would conduct its activities, were in dilapidated condition. A thorough repairing plan was laid down and repairing work was taken up urgently in May, 2022. On 18th February, 2023, the Auspicious Shivaratri Day, after completion of the renovation work the centre was formally inaugurated by Swami Suviranandaji Maharaj, General Secretary Maharaj, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur. Swami Divyanandaji Maharaj, Senior Trustee and Adhyaksha Ramakrishna Math, Cossipore and Swami Bodhasaranandaji Maharaj, Assistant General Secretary Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission also graced the occasion. Around forty monks of nearby centres and around one hundred devotees participated in the programme.
